Why You Should Start Your Decor with the Floor

Floor and decor is a basic principle that can drastically affect how you approach interior design. Basically, it involves starting your decor concept at the floor and working your way up from there.
The floor and decor concept is in direct contrast to the traditional method which involves choosing a wall color and then working both up and down simultaneously.
By starting from the floor up, you’re not only organizing the way you design, you’re ensuring the floor isn’t forgotten – a crucial element of good design.
So, how does the floor and decor concept work? What’s involved and why does it work? To learn the answers to these questions and more, keep reading.
Materials Can Set the Tone
The flooring materials that you choose can dramatically alter the tone of a room. For example, if you’re going for a warm and cozy, country look then you’re not going to opt for marble tile.
Adversely, if you’re striving for ultra-modern, then you’re not going to spring for stain-resistant carpeting.
Wood floors can range from high-gloss and ultra contemporary to rustic and truly country, stone floors can invoke images of warm kitchens or a cool, beach setting. Meanwhile, carpet often adds warmth and a “family” feeling while tile adds sterility.
Don’t Forget Function
While materials can set the tone, they’re also often tied to function.
For example, you probably wouldn’t install wall-to-wall carpeting in the bathroom or kitchen. And unless you live in a tropical climate, you’re unlikely to throw down tiles in the bedroom.
Another function consideration is who will be using it. While a stunning and polished hardwood floor might be beautiful, it may not be the most practical choice for a full family with a house full of kids and animals.
Colors Can Set Tone Too
Just as materials can set the tone, colors can too. For example, a white ash hardwood floor is cool and contemporary while a warm, honey oak is warm and welcoming. As with any interior design aspect or surface, color makes a huge impact.
To understand where your flooring falls on the color spectrum, go shopping with a color wheel. You can use the wheel to compare flooring colors to see where they fall.
Mark your flooring color on the wheel and then bring it with you to shop for wall paint, furniture and fabrics – that way, you can stay on top of your complimentary colors. Now, that’s floor and decor.
Be Willing to Let Go
Another aspect of floor and decor is a willingness to let go. You’re never going to achieve an early American country feel with wall-to-wall, suburban beige carpeting.
It’s not going to happen. So, you have to be willing to bite the bullet and change your flooring with your design directions.
