Interior Creative Design :: Interior Window Shutters Interior Window Shutters:A Guide to Interior Louver Window Shutters

Interior window shutters are being rediscovered by people looking for a traditional, functional window treatment. Another reason for their popularity is that interior shutters can be installed on virtually any window in any room. To learn more about interior window shutters, keep reading. How much do interior window shutters cost? Shutters with fixed louvers are less expensive. Most home centers and lumberyards carry both kinds ready-made from unfinished pine. Sizes range from 6 to 13 in. wide and 16 to 48 in. tall; they cost about $10 to $50 a pair, depending on size and louver type. If you can't find ready-mades, custom versions are available. They can be made to exact sizes, saving you the hassle of cutting each shutter to fit. However, they cost more, and typically it takes at least a week or two for delivery. Colonial-style shutters are another option. They have raised-bevel panels similar to those in kitchen cabinet doors. Though elegant, they aren't as versatile as louver shutters for matching a decor. And the only way to let in light is to swing them open. What's more, these shutters aren't sold ready-made; they must be custom-built. How do you install interior window shutters? Your first step is to check whether the shutters need to be shortened. They should cover half the window height and come up to, but not extend past, the top of the lower sash on double-hung windows. Trim the shutters to length with a sliding power miter, radial-arm or table saw; hand sawing isn't accurate enough. If removing 1 in. or less, take it all off the bottom of the shutters. If you have to remove more, take half off the top and half off the bottom. The shutters are installed inside the window frame with the hinges screwed to the inside surface of the side jambs; this is easy if the window frame is square. To check out a frame, tape two shutters together and stand them in the window opening with the left-hand shutter touching the left jamb. Make Sure They’re Even Be sure the bottoms of the shutters are flat on the window stool-the flat horizontal molding that rests on the sill. If there's no gap between the jamb and shutter, that side is square. Tape the other two shutters together and check the right side the same way. Next, hinge and hang. Hanging two pairs of shutters requires eight hinges. You can avoid having to chisel out 16 mortises-one for each hinge by using non-mortising hinges. Start by joining each pair of shutters with two 2-in. nonmortising hinges. Screw the hinges directly to the edge of the shutters. Next, attach two hinges to the interior window shutters along the side jambs. This time, the hinge barrels should face out into the room. Hold one pair of shutters in the window opening and fasten the hinges with screws driven into the side jamb. Hang the remaining pair the same way. See also: All Articles for Interior Creative Design
