Kitchen Track Lighting:

Installing Track Lighting in the Kitchen

Custom Search

Kitchen track lighting is a perfect solution for a room that needs well-directed lighting solutions. Not only will track lighting improve your use of the kitchen space, it will also update it from a design perspective.

For more information on track lighting, including its benefits, where to install it and the type to choose, keep reading.

Benefits of Track Lighting

The major benefit of kitchen track lighting is that you can direct your light, meaning you can illuminate certain work surfaces or eating areas. However, because track lighting often isn't as powerful as a single, high-wattage light, you may need supplementary lighting under the cupboards or an additional fixture.

The other benefit of track lighting is that it's attractive and modern looking. The fixtures often have a contemporary look and feel, while the diffusion of light suggests a newer design touch.

Where to Install

Ideally, you want lights pointing directly at all of your work surfaces, including the sink, counter areas, stove and even the fridge. You'll also want lighting above or directed at your eating area or breakfast nook.

Often, most houses install a separate fixture above their eating area, overhead kitchen track lighting over their work surfaces and then additional under-cabinet lighting for increased counter-top illumination.

Type of Track Lighting

The best track lighting to install, particularly if you're taking on a DIY-project is the kind that doesn't require any rewiring. You simply connect the main outlet connection to the existing light socket in your kitchen and then customize the configuration and light placement for your kitchen.

Most track lighting allows you to install multiple legs in either an X, T, V or L formation. Depending on the size of your kitchen and counter placement, you'll want to adjust your mounts and lights accordingly.

If you're increasing the number of lights, want to move the kitchen track lighting fixture location or want to run your track lighting a longer-than-standard distance, it's recommended that you consult a local electrician.
