The program even includes name brand paint colors, meaning you can pick a color, try it out and go to the store for that exact color.
Probably the best thing about this interior design software package is how simple it is.
It comes packed with tutorials and it’s targeted for the home user, making it perfect for the home decorator that wants to try functions like virtual interior painting.
Better Homes and Gardens Interior Designer Pro 8.0

Platform: Windows/Mac
This is the professional version of the software listed earlier and it’s significantly more comprehensive.
It’s still easy to use, but it allows you to create blueprints, roofing, manual framing features and essentially gives you a lot more freedom for architectural changes.
Of course, all the same virtual interior painting features are available in this version as the consumer version.
This version however is more geared towards the home builder, renovator or major overhauler who is looking for a CAD program that incorporates design elements.
HGTV Home Design and Remodeling Suite
Price: $40-$50
Platform: Windows
If you’re looking to do simple and basic changes like virtual interior painting, floor changes or moving a bit of furniture around – this is a great piece of software that’s affordable and easy to use. You can even start your project simply by uploading a picture of the room.
Admittedly, it doesn’t have all the architectural or fancy features that other programs have, but it gets the job done and it’s simple.
You may not be able to customize the cabinetry, but you can definitely change the wall color and experiment with layouts.
Punch! Professional Home Design Suite Vers. 12
Price: $80-$100
Platform: Windows
Punch may have more features and virtual interior painting customization options, but it’s also a bit harder to use. This software falls somewhere between home decorating software and architecture. The learning curve is steep on this one, so be prepared.
Google SketchUp
Price: Free
Platform: Windows/Mac
Google SketchUp is a free layout design surface that’s great to try out to see if you want to invest in a more expensive or full-function virtual interior painting or home layout program.
You can find it for free at http://sketchup.google.com and you can do even more with SketchUp Pro.
